TeleMessage’s Modded Signal Hacked

The Smarsh-owned application – TeleMessage that offers modified versions of encrypted messaging applications (like Signal, WhatsApp, and Telegram) has now turned a victim of a hacking attempt. Last week, the app received attention after Mike Waltz (Former US National Security Advisor) was reported to be using a modded version of Signal from TeleMessage. Notably, TeleMessage allows its users to archive messages from encrypted apps, and the hacker was after this encrypted messages and data stored by government officials and well-known companies.

While it is being said that the messages and data of officials and Waltz himself have not been compromised, it has been reported that the data which has been hacked includes messages, contact details (of government officials), backend login credentials of TeleMessage, and more. Speaking more, data from Coinbase, Scotiabank, and US Custom and Border Protection have also been extracted by the hacker as per the report.

Furthermore, it has also been revealed that the messages and other data from archived chat logs weren’t actually end-to-end encrypted between TeleMessage’s modded Signal and its storage location. This poses a great security failure from the brand’s side, which had made it vulnerable to hacking attempts. So far, Smarsh hasn’t come forward to comment on the matter and about the counter measures taken, neither has Signal, Coinbase, Scotiabank, nor the US Custom and Border Protection.
