Meta Expands New 13+ Content Settings for Teen Accounts Globally

Back in October last year, Meta had updated Instagram Teen Accounts in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada by defaulting teens into a new 13+ content setting. This setting was inspired by movie rating criteria and parent feedback, and was designed to help teens see age-appropriate content by default. As per what the company has shared, 9 out of 10 teens have remained in this setting since its launch. Meta had also introduced a stricter Limited Content setting for parents who prefer a more restrictive experience for their teens.

Now, the new 13+ content settings are being expanded globally across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger Teen Accounts. Speaking more, Facebook’s new 13+ default setting has been designed to hide content that may be inappropriate for teens in places like Feed and Reels. It will also limit the ability of teens to interact with Profiles, Pages, Groups, and Events that primarily post inappropriate content.

Regarding Messenger, the 13+ default setting will limit teens’ ability to view links to inappropriate Facebook content or chat with accounts that mainly share such content on Facebook. To note, the Limited Content setting, which Meta claims to be more stringent, will also be made available on Facebook and Messenger later this year.

Apart from the above-mentioned details, Meta is also testing a new way on Instagram to help prevent teens from repeatedly seeing certain types of content. As mentioned by the company, content related to nutrition, weightlifting, or coping with anxiety can be helpful, but it should be balanced with other types of content and should not be shown repeatedly. This is why Meta is now testing ways to limit teens from seeing too many posts of this kind in one go, including in Explore, Feed, and Reels.
