Google is Using AI to Protect You From Scams Across Search, Chrome, and Android

Scammers constantly find new ways to target victims, and sometimes it can be really difficult to stay safe. But now, Google has launched new AI features to help tackle this problem. The company has shared an update on how it’s using AI to protect users from online scams. From fake websites to scammy phone calls and shady notifications, Google is stepping up its efforts across Search, Chrome, and Android to block bad actors before they can deceive users.
If you’ve ever searched for customer service numbers or help online, you’ve probably come across scammy links. Google says its AI systems are now blocking hundreds of millions of scam results every day. Thanks to new updates, Google is catching 20 times more scam pages than before. For example, impersonation scams, like fake airline customer support pages, have been cut down by more than 80% in Search.
In Chrome, the Enhanced Protection mode already gives users more security than the standard version. Now, Google is adding even more defence with Gemini Nano — an on-device AI model that works behind the scenes. It can flag suspicious websites instantly, even if it’s a scam the system hasn’t seen before. This upgrade is already helping block remote tech support scams and will soon roll out to Android as well.
Scam risks don’t stop with websites. Some shady sites abuse push notifications to send misleading or harmful messages. Google is now adding AI-powered alerts to Chrome on Android. If Chrome detects a suspicious notification, it will show you a warning with options to unsubscribe or view the blocked content. And if the alert seems like a mistake, you can still allow future messages from that site.
Scammers are also targeting people through calls and texts that seem normal at first but turn dangerous later. To tackle this, Google has added on-device scam detection in Google Messages and the Phone by Google app. The goal is to spot and block these scams in real time — before they go too far.
Google says scams are constantly evolving, but it’s using the latest AI tools to stay ahead and make its products safer for everyone. From search results to messages on your phone, these updates are designed to give you more protection without getting in your way.
