Vinesh Phogat hits a hattrick at CWG

Raining gold medals for India like cats and dogs, and for wrestler Vinesh Phogat it is even more a special one; 2014, 2018 and now 2022. That’s our Indian pride and Vinesh’s medal streak.

Phogat was up against Sri Lankan Chamodya Maduravlage Don in the final round-robin bout, she entered with a silent prayer and then by touching the mat and placing her fingers back on her forehead. Within less than two and a half minutes, the Indian flag was the winner.

Vinesh had won all the technical points in all those 144 seconds, but the victory came when she pinned her opponent.

Meanwhile, with only four wrestlers competing in 53kg weight category, the medals were decided in Nordic format – a round-robin format unlike a knockout one in all other weight categories.

Canada’s Samantha Leigh Stewart and Nigeria’s Mercy Bolafunoluwa Adekuoroye were also victims who fell in Vinesh’s trap.

Moreover, Vinesh Phogat becomes the first Indian female wrestler to win three consecutive Gold medals at CWG. But, the Asian Games next year will be a greater challenger for the wrestler.
