India lifts maiden Thomas Cup; history scripted

A dream which every Indian thought has come as a reality, India wins the ultimate title in badminton, the Thomas Cup. However, Kidambi Srikanth, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, Lakshay Sen and HS Prannoy. They knew, they said as much, they hoped the country would believe, they didn’t mind if it didn’t. They were due their date with destiny – no matter what others reckoned.

By defeating Indonesia with a 3 – 0 score in the finals, India ruined Indonesia’s dream of a 15th title win.

Lakshya Sen shrugged off a week of being pummelled by a host of top names, to rally from a set down to beat Anthony Ginting 7 – 21, 21 – 17, 21 – 16 on the back off a confidence in his defense that ballooned into attacking swagger in the kills.

A smash from Srikanth led the country to its historic Thomas Cup triumph. Signs of happiness and joy were all around the team, everyone was jumping in delight, and a string of emotional tears.
