The Story Behind The National Technology Day – May 11, 1998

The 11th of May has been observed as National Technology Day since 1999 to honor India’s scientific ability and technical advances. It was obvious to pick May 11th because it was on that date in 1998 that India successfully performed the first of five series of nuclear tests in Pokhran, led by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The tests demonstrated India’s power to the rest of the globe.

The Story Behind The National Technology Day - May 11, 1998

On the honor of National Technology Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his “appreciation” to scientists for their “initiatives” that led to the “successful Pokhran tests in 1998.” PM Modi praised Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s “exemplary leadership,” saying he shown “great political daring and statesmanship.”

“The world is well aware of the Pokhran tests,” Shri Narendra Modi said in one of his addresses, referring to India’s spectacular efforts in the Pokhran tests. Effective tests have been carried out under Atal ji’s guidance, and the globe was witness to India’s power. The scientists were a credit to the country.

“After the first series of tests the world community placed sanctions on India. On 13th May 1998, Atal ji again called for tests, thus showing that he was made of a different mettle. If we had had a weak PM, he or she would have got scared on the same day. But Atal ji was different. He did not get scared,” Shri Modi continues, recalling the incident.
