Google Chrome 154 – Confirmation Prompt for HTTP Sites
With the Chrome 154, Google will be capable of automatically redirecting HTTP requests to HTTPS, however for websites that does not support HTTPS, a confirmation prompt will be shared on the browser for users pointing out the security concern. To note, this prompt will be displayed when accessing a public site without HTTPS for the first time.
Speaking more, the HTTPS adoption took place during the period in between 2015 and 2020, and following which, the overall support stabilized by 95% and 99%. To add, the public website HTTPS usage (excluding internal or local network resources) raised to 97% on Linux from 84%, to 98% on Windows from 95%, and to 99% both on Android and macOS.
As of now, the ‘Always Use Secure Connections’ feature still remains to be an optional setting, and even though the brand had plans to make it default (in 2023), currently limited activation in Incognito mode and selected user experiments is offered. It is due to the continued reliance on HTTP protocol that the full HTTPS coverage still remains unreachable.
On Chrome 154, the secure connection request will only be made default on publicly accessible websites, and this is to avoid the unnecessary prompts when users access internal resources. The working behavior can be adjusted accordingly on the browser settings.

Also, before the Chrome 154 global roll-out that has been scheduled to take place in the month of October 2026, the brand will be testing it with 1 billion+ users who have enabled the Enhanced Safe Browsing feature. Following the Chrome 147 release that is expected in April 2026, the ‘Always Use Secure Connections’ option will be made default for the mentioned users.
