Airtel Broadband DNS-Based Traffic-Level Security Filters: Prevents Users From Landing on Potentially Risky Websites by Verifying the URL and Domain

Cyber threats upon people come in many ways and forms, and the fake malicious website scams are the most common among them. Previously, we have covered multiple updates regarding such scams and how to identify them. Airtel, a notable telecom brand based in India, has a better system which will prevent people from actually landing on these websites, protecting them from the set traps.

Airtel Broadband’s DNS-Based Traffic-Level Security Filters for Safeguarding Users Against Risky Websites

If you are an Airtel Broadband user and by chance click on a link that could re-direct you to a potentially risky website, thanks to the DNS-based and traffic-level filters that Airtel makes use of, the request from the side of the user will be intercepted and a warning page from Airtel will be displayed instead of loading the actual web page.

Looking into the source code, from the HTML code page, it can be understood that the assets are loaded from Airtel’s CDN (content delivery network – ‘https://assets.airtel.in/…/spam-protection/’)  and the other details like the background, layout, and formatting matches that of a standard ISP warning template. Moreover, the page title mentions – ‘Airtel found this site dangerous’. All these confirm that the web page the user will be on was served via the Airtel security filter, and not from the website the user attempted to visit.

Speaking more, this means that Airtel’s system does not examine the full content of the websites, but simply checks the URL as well as the domain, and these will be verified side-by-side with known phishing and malware lists. This process is done by DNS filtering or transparent proxy scanning, and when the URL/domain appears on a phishing database or if it has been reported, the mentioned Airtel warning page is displayed – thereby warning and preventing the user from visiting the malicious website.

[In related news, Airtel had silently discontinued its INR 189 voice-only recharge plan, and Indian users won’t be able to access it hereafter.]
