SpaceX to apply for Starlink licence in India

According to Financial Express, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Elon Musk’s SpaceX-owned satellite internet service company Starlink are negotiating a license to provide satellite-based communication services in India.

To provide satellite-based communication services, businesses must obtain a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license from the government.

According to sources, Starlink will likely apply for the same within a month. While the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) can issue the license, the spectrum will be allocated after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and the government decide whether to auction it or allocate it administratively.

A tech enthusiast Utsav also posted the news that SpaceX will soon apply for a DOT license in India.
