Google Chrome for Sale? Will Perplexity or OpenAI Acquire it?

Alphabet Inc.’s Google had been undergoing trial for an antitrust case filed by the US Department of Justice back in 2020 after the brand was allegedly found out that it has been following monopolistic practices in order to gain dominance over the online search and advertising sectors. Last year in 2024, the ruling came regarding the case and Google was indeed found to be practicing unfair strategies and this year in April 2025, certain remedies were proposed to Google. Among the many remedies proposed, one of the most notable proposals was to sell its Chrome web browser. Around the same time itself, the VP and Head of OpenAI’s ChatGPT – Nick Turley had also revealed that OpenAI is interested in getting Google’s Chrome browser.

Newer updates have now arrived pointing out that both OpenAI and Perplexity (as well as Yahoo) are showing their interest in acquiring the Chrome browser from Google. Aravind Srinivas-headed Perplexity as mentioned has put forward an offer of USD 34.5 billion in cash – which is about twice the brand’s total valuation. Following this, Sam Altman of OpenAI also shared that if Chrome is actually going to be sold, the brand will be taking a look into it.

While the Chrome spin-off isn’t yet official, the interest shown by Perplexity, OpenAI, and other brands portray how big the Chrome acquisition will be for them. Additionally, both Perplexity and OpenAI had previously also reported that when it comes to developing AI technologies and training their models, the two are always below to what Google is capable of doing thanks to the ‘umpty’ amount of data that Chrome holds.
