Assam’s Kamakhya Station is now home to drone-powered coach cleaning operation: Ministry of Railways

In this new era of growing technology and development, Indian Railways has devised a smarter way to maintain its coach fleet: a drone-powered coach cleaning operation. Kamakhya Station in Assam is now home to this operation.

The above-shared video shows how the drone is used to clean train coaches. The demonstration focused on cleaning high-rise and hard-to-reach structures, including the roofs and outer areas of the train’s coaches. Drones equipped with high-pressure nozzles and advanced navigation systems reached structures that were previously accessible only through manual climbing or scaffolding. This drone technology enhances cleaning operations by improving accessibility and precision while also reducing the dependency on manual labor. It is done in action for deep cleaning.
Back in April 2025, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) conducted its first-ever experimental drone-based cleaning operation at Kamakhya railway station. The areas covered during the experimental cleaning included the Kamakhya coaching depot sick line, under the under-floor wheel Lathe Shed, the exterior dome portion of Kamakhya station, and several train coaches.
This drone-powered cleaning aligns with Indian Railways’ vision of embracing cutting-edge, smart maintenance practices that adhere to international standards.
