WhatsApp Adds Subscriptions, Promoted Channels, and Ads, But Keeps Chats Private

WhatsApp is updating its Updates tab with new features to help users discover more content and connect with businesses — without affecting personal chats.
Here’s what’s new:
- Channel Subscriptions: You’ll be able to pay a monthly fee to get exclusive content from your favourite Channels.
- Promoted Channels: WhatsApp will start suggesting Channels you might like, giving admins a way to grow their audience.
- Ads in Status: Businesses can now promote products or services in Status updates. You can tap the ad to start a chat directly.
These features will be limited to the Updates tab. Your chats, calls, and groups remain end-to-end encrypted and private. WhatsApp says it uses only basic info — like your country, language, and followed Channels — to show relevant content. Your phone number and messages won’t be shared or used for ads.

The new features will begin rolling out globally to Android and iOS users over the next couple of months, so you can expect to see them gradually appear in your Updates tab.
