Grand Theft Auto VI release postponed to 19 November 2026 — Will this make GTA VI the longest-developed videogame ever?

The hype around Grand Theft Auto VI was a lot when Rockstar Games announced the preliminary work of the game sometime around 2014, but with the continuous delay in the release of this game over the years, the fans have now started getting disappointed.

Back in May 2025, Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto VI would be released on 26th May 2026, and now, yesterday, the company has announced that the release date is postponed yet again. Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on 19th November, 2026. As per the company, these extra months will allow them to finish the game with the level of polish, fans have come to expect and deserve.

Well, with the continuous delay in the release, many fans have started joking about whether GTA VI has now broken the longest development record for a video game, as the game was announced for the first time around 2014, and with the release now set for 2026, the development period is about 12 years.

The Guinness World Records has answered this query of the users online via its official X handle. The current record for the longest development period for a video game is 14 years and 43 days, held by FPS’ Duke Nukem Forever. The game was officially announced on 28 April 1997 by developer 3D Realms and was finally released on 10 June 2011.
