USB-C now mandatory for all new laptops sold in the European Union

Since December 2024, mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, videogame consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, microphones, portable navigation systems and earbuds sold in the EU have arrived with support for USB-C charging.

This was done due to the European Commission’s Directive 2022/2380, which amended EU radio equipment rules to create a common charging solution for a range of portable electronic devices. USB-C charging was made mandatory for all new devices (mobile and other electronic devices) sold in the EU.

Earlier, laptops were given an extension till 28th April, 2026, due to their higher power requirements and the technical changes needed by manufacturers. The deadline has passed, and now all new laptops sold in the EU will arrive with USB-C charging support.

This move was taken to increase consumer convenience, reduce e-waste, and allow consumers to also buy new electronic devices without a charger (if they already have one). This means you can charge your mobile phone and other similar electronic devices with one USB-C charger, though consumers may still need to check whether a charger or cable is suitable for a particular electronic device, especially for high-power machines.
