AOL to discontinue its dial-up internet service next month

AOL’s dial-up service started in 1991, and AOL’s dial-up tone, followed by the You’ve got mail announcement, became the soundtrack for many Americans. But with the growing times, the customers switched to other internet access options.

There are not many AOL dial-up users left, but some of the people still use this service who probably don’t have many options for internet access, or are in remote rural areas, or feel that the broadband infrastructure is expensive. Well, AOL has recently made a surprising announcement for these dial-up users.

According to the AOL Help page, AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue dial-up Internet. On September 30, 2025, this service and the associated software, the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, which are optimized for older operating systems and dial-up internet connections, will be discontinued.

The company has also specified that this change will not affect any other benefits in your AOL plan. AOL’s dial-up service will be around 34 years, when it finally shuts down by the end of next month. The dial-up users will now have to find a new way to access the internet service.
