Zoom Lays Off 1,300 of its Employees

The video communications firm, Zoom founded in 2011 by Eric Yuan had rapid growth at the time of the Covid – 19 pandemic when everyone started to work from their homes. The company grew rapidly by about three times increasing its revenue and the price of its shares.

But among the many large tech giants, Zoom has also been having a lot of issues due to all the economic downfalls the companies are facing now. Zoom had also seen the price of its shares drop by about 90% compared to the price it had in October 2020

All these have forced the company to let go of 1,300 of its employees which amounts to a total of 15% of its global workforce. The company has already issued the memos to the employees that are currently being laid off. The US workers have by now received their memos via their emails and other employees residing in other countries will receive them as per the local requirements.

The laid-off employees will be receiving 16 weeks of their pay including the healthcare coverage and the bonus the employees have been offered for the year.

With the increasing expenses within the company, CEO Eric Yuan has also decided to cut his pay by 98% along with his bonuses for the year. The employees in his executive team will also be having a 20% cut in their pay as well.

If you use Zoom frequently, this feature may sound similar to its push-to-talk feature — and that’s because it is. Zoom has had the option since at least 2020, and it’s useful when you want to speak out during a meeting but don’t want to be unmuted for too long.

Google said it will begin distributing its own version of the shortcut to all Workspace users on September 9th, but it could take up to 15 days. When it arrives, it will not be enabled by default, so you must enable it using Google Meet’s settings.

Google’s efforts to unify Duo and Meet have resulted in three apps: the new Meet app (which combines both Duo and Meet), the old Meet (Original) app, and a Duo shortcut that links to Meet. It’s certainly something that only Google could come up with. That said, I’m very confident the new push-to-talk feature will be available in the new Google Meet app, but it’s unclear whether it will be available in the Meet (Original) app, as Google will eventually abandon it.

Hosts will have more control over meetings now that they may schedule Zoom meetings with Focus Mode enabled from the beginning, reducing participant distractions. Preferred ‘Gallery Views’ can also be saved to each individual meeting ID, allowing the host to load presets rather than having to change the camera placement in every meeting, saving time.

Zoom Video Chat
Missed video calls will now be shown in a convenient location in your conversation, allowing you to easily verify what you’ve missed. You can also get to the channel or meeting by clicking on the notification. GIFs will now be displayed in your message box, and movies set using Zoom Chat will now be saved locally on your mobile devices for the convenience of access.

Users will be able to book workspaces using an interactive map that can be accessed on-site or remotely with Zoom Rooms Workspace Reservation. Later this month, the update will be made available for public beta testing.

For Mac and Windows users, the platform now supports “local-only screen share.” Previously, the capability was only available on Zoom Rooms Appliances, which let the host to share their notes and screen with an in-room (locally present) individual while keeping it hidden from other participants.
