Vi’s New Recharge-Linked Handset Theft & Loss Insurance Plan – Officially Announced

The newly-announced recharge-linked handset theft & loss insurance plan of Vi aims to address the concern of its users when losing their devices, as traditional damage-only insurance does not cover such matters. This new initiative targets Vi prepaid users, and they can avail it both for iOS and Android devices. As mentioned, three recharge packs of Vi offer the handset theft & loss insurance plan, and these are considered to be the most economical handset protection choice.

Speaking more, the selected recharge packs include the INR 61 (2GB data for 15 days), INR 201 (10GB data for 30 days), and INR 251 (10GB data for 30 days) packs, and these will offer 30 days, 180 days, and 365 days handset insurance validity. Up to INR 25,000 insured SUM can be claimed across all the mentioned packs. Notably, simplified claim process, minimized paperwork, and reduced market gaps (with respect to high premiums, accessibility, convenience) are also added features.

While third-party apps like Truecaller have long been the go-to solution for spam detection, telecom operators are now taking matters into their own hands. Back in september, Airtel introduced its own AI-powered system for identifying spam calls and messages, while the state-owned BSNL showcased their AI/ML solution at the Indian Mobile Congress 2024. Vi’s entry into this space marks another major telecom provider acknowledging the growing need for built-in spam protection.

In an era where SMS-based fraud is on the rise, Vi’s new solution automatically flags suspicious messages with a “Suspected Spam” tag, giving users an instant heads-up about potential threats. The system works in real-time, analyzing incoming messages using AI algorithms trained on millions of examples to spot fraudulent links, unauthorized promotions, and identity theft attempts.

Our AI-powered spam detection technology reinforces our commitment to customer safety by delivering proactive, real-time protection. The new system employs sophisticated pattern recognition to learn from various spam indicators, including suspicious links and unusual sender patterns. But Vi isn’t stopping at just SMS protection. The company revealed it’s also working on solutions to curb spam, including voice calls, to ensure its users are further protected from unsolicited calls.

Their current measures include:

• Simplified mobile-app URL for reporting spam
• Whitelisting of brand message URLs
• UCC (Unsolicited Commercial Communication) detection to identify bulk call patterns

We recently saw Vi announcing the T20 data pack for users starting from Rs 25 to Rs 181. Now Vi users in Haryana will have to look for a plan that is above Rs 100 because below Rs 100 there was only one plan which has been removed. Vi is not the first company to do it because Airtel has also done it earlier by removing the Rs 99 plan for users and leaving the Rs 155 plan as the cheapest plan for the users. Though Vi is the third largest telecom service provider in India but still due to lack of funds and equipment they have not launched 5G service for their users yet. This move is certainly going to bump up the ARPU but marginally.
