Vodafone and the owner of Three have agreed on the deal to merge both of the British telecom networks. With this merging, these companies will together form the UK’s largest mobile phone operator.

Vodafone is the UK’s third-largest telecom operator and Three is the UK’s fourth-largest telecom operator. When the merging is complete, the new company will have more than 27 million subscribers, putting it behind rivals EE, owned by BT, Virgin Media O2, owned by Spain’s Telefonica, and the US-listed company Liberty Global.

The talks have been ongoing for some time between Vodafone and CK Hutchison, the Hong Kong–controlled owner of Three. In the newly merged company, Vodafone will have 51% and CK Hutchinson will have 49% of the combined business.

It is said that the merged business would invest £11 billion in the UK over 10 years. Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone’s group chief executive, May, announced plans to cut 11,000 jobs as part of making the company more on track from the struggling state of the company when former chief executive Nick Read was in office.

Vodafone UK is a British telecommunications service provider, and a part of Vodafone Group, the world’s second-largest mobile phone company. Vodafone has about 17.9 million subscribers as of May 2023. Vodafone has been the longest-running network in the UK since its first cellular network call was made in January 1985.

Hutchison 3G UK Ltd or Three UK is a British telecommunications and internet service provider currently based in Reading, England. It is a subsidiary of CK Hutchison Holdings, operating under the global ‘Three’ brand. Three has about 10.3 million subscribers as of May 2023. The company was launched on March 3, 2003, as the UK’s first commercial 100% 3G network.

Following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the sports in the United Kingdom have been put on hault as the Britishers pay their last respect to the longest serving Monarch in the history of British. It’s one of the darkest period in the United Kingdom.

The English Football League has posted on their Twitter page: “On the day of the funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the EFL and its clubs would like to join the nation in reflecting on the late Sovereign’s remarkable life of service to the country, and our thoughts are with the Royal Family.”

Moreover, former English football captain and legend David Beckham also queued for almost 12 hours last week to see the Queen lying in state at the Westminster Hall.

“Our Queen is home. Today we said a final farewell to Her Majesty the Queen. This week the world has mourned the loss of a unique, inspirational and caring leader,” said the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player on his Instagram handle.

“People from all walks of life came together in their thousands to show gratitude for our beloved Queen. Alongside the incredible ceremony and tradition, we have watched a loving family grieve for a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother with dignity and dedication.

Moreover, Premier League club Southampton FC were also among the few clubs to pay their last respect and condolence to Her Majesty. They posted a picture of the Queen presenting the FA Cup trophy to their captain Peter Rodrigues after the 1976 final at the Wembley in London.

Wrestler Bajrang Punia gave India its first gold medal in the sport of wrestling at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Punia defeated Lachlan McNeil of Canada in the 65kg freestyle wrestling final.

Bajrang Punia also sealed a bronze in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and has a gold and silver medal by him in the Commonwealth Games. His Commonwealth journey started off quite well as he won a silver in the 2014 edition in Glasgow, in the 61kg category.

Moreover, the Haryana boy won a silver at the Asian Games as well in 2014, a gold at Gold Coast 2018 and adding more glory to his name with an Asiad gold in Jakarta.

Bajrang beat the Canadian by 9-2 points, he won three of his four bouts in the first round.

Technique and Stamina was the main element of the Indian which gave him an upper hand against the Canadian.

Although, it doesn’t end here for India, wrestler Sakshi Malik outplayed Canada’s Ana Gonzalez in the women’s 62kg category to add a second gold for team India in the wrestling sport. Commonwealth Games is off with its 22nd edition and the opening ceremony is underway at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. The place will also be the venue for the closing ceremony, the home of UK Athletics, which is the governing body for athletics in the United Kingdom.

PV Sindhu and Manpreet Singh will be leading the Indian contingent, Sindhu was announced as the flag bearer after the unprecedented withdrawal of Olympic Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra due to his injury.

Manpreet was later announced as co-flag bearer after the IOA notified that every contingent needs to be led by a male and female athlete.

As part of measures to intensify the economic pressure on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, Britain, the United States, Japan, and Canada would stop new imports of Russian gold, the British government announced on Sunday.

According to the government’s official statement before the Group of Seven leaders meeting in Germany on Sunday, the restriction will soon be in effect and will also apply to newly mined gold. The decision won’t have an impact on gold that was previously exported from Russia.

According to the government, Russian gold exports last year amounted to 12.6 billion pounds ($15.45 billion), and rich Russians have recently started purchasing bullion to lessen the economic effect of Western sanctions.

“The measures we have announced today will directly hit Russian oligarchs and strike at the heart of Putin’s war machine,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in the statement.

“We need to starve the Putin regime of its funding. The UK and our allies are doing just that.”

The most recent action comes after the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) suspended certification for six Russian refiners of precious metals in March.
