Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 – Now Official

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip (3nm) that has now been introduced equips the brand’s own 3rd generation custom Oryon CPUs with a peak clock speed of 4.6GHz. In comparison to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 offers 20% single-core and 17% multi-core CPU performance, along with up to 35% CPU power efficiency (16% overall power savings). About its architecture, it consists of 2x 4.60GHz-clocked prime cores and 6x 3.63GHz-clocked performance cores. The support for LPDDR5X RAM that runs at 5300MHz is also given on the device.

On the GPU side, the next-generation Adreno GPU has been equipped within the device, and it is clocked at 1.2GHz. 23% increased overall performance, 20% reduced power consumption, and 25% improved Ray Tracing are its notable upgrades when compared to the previous Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. Adreno High Performance Memory (HPM), Tile Memory Heap, Mesh Shading, Unreal Engine 5, and more are also its other added features. Furthermore, a new Hexagon NPU that is 37% faster, and added AI accelerators for running the latest LLMs, are also part of the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. A 16% better performance per watt will also be delivered via the Hexagon NPU.

Regarding the camera aspects, the Qualcomm Spectra AI ISP offers Advanced Professional Video (APV) Codec, which brings features like near-loss video quality, greater control in post production, highlight and shadow adjustments, precise color grading, and many more. Also, with the triple 20-bit ISPs, 4x dynamic range is offered for the first time. Many other camera features are also supported by the chip.

Finally, speaking of its connectivity specs, a new 5G standard has been set thanks to the Snapdragon X85 5G Modem RF System that is equipped within the chipset. Additionally, Release 17 and 18 capabilities have also been given with the added 5G AI processor. FastConnect 7900 mobile connectivity system, AI-enhanced WiFi, UWB, WiFi ranging, Bluetooth Channel Sounding with Proximity AI, and support for more other specs are also given on the flagship chip.

Till now, Android has powered various smartphones and tablets in the industry, but what if you get to know that we may soon get to see an Android-powered PC?

Amusing right? Well, today at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, Google’s SVP of Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh, has officially confirmed that the company is working on an Android-based PC.

While talking to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amo, Osterloh said, “In the past, we’ve always had the different systems between what we are building on PCs and what we are building on smartphones. We’ve embarked on a project to combine that. We are building together a common technical foundation for our products on PCs and desktop computing systems.”

He further mentioned, “This is another way we can leverage all of the great work we’re doing together on our AI stack, our full stack, bringing Gemini models, bringing the assistant, bringing all of our applications and developer community into the PC domain. And I think this is another way in which Android is gonna be able to serve everyone in every computing category.”

Other than this, not much has been revealed about the upcoming PC. Though, since Google has hinted towards the Android-based PC, we may come across some more details in the future. Stay tuned.

Notably, it promises a cooler and consistent charging experience, and is capable of delivering up to 140W charging speeds.

Here’s more about it.

Qualcomm’s Latest Quick Charge 5+ Introduced

As mentioned, the Quick Charge 5+ standard has been introduced as an enhanced version of the brand’s previous Quick Charge 5 and in order to deliver a cooler and consistent charging experience, it makes use of lower voltage at higher currents. Up to 140W charging (20V, 7A), 0% to 50% in five minutes, and dynamic power flow control are the biggest changes in Qualcomm’s latest Quick Charge 5+. Also to note, the Quick Charge 5+ relies on a smarter and a more efficient path in comparison to other charging solutions that are limited to 5A and require higher voltage to deliver faster charging speeds. Thus, with its new charging standard, Qualcomm has easily addressed issues of heating and its impact on battery health as well as battery longevity.

Speaking more, the Quick Charge 5+ has the USB PD-PPS as the underlying charging protocol and it is backward compatible to previous versions till the Quick Charge 2, thus a Quick Charge 5+ certified charging adapter will be able to power a wide range of devices. About its availability details, at the upcoming Snapdragon Summit that has been scheduled to take place from the 23rd of September 2025 to the 25th of the same month, the first devices supporting the Quick Charge 5+ tech of Qualcomm will be announced. Later this year in 2025, Quick Charge 5+ certified chargers and accessories will also be hitting the market.
