Olympic gold-medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra has made a big statement from the athletes point of concern at the joint meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Government of India (GOI) at Lausanne, where he called for a larger focus on athlete involvement in affairs that affect them.

“It is athletes who suffer in case of any governance lapses and will continue to suffer if there is any suspension, derecognition or other sanction on the IOA. All of this when athletes have no control or culpability in respect of the matters that affect their careers and livelihood.” said Bindra at the meeting.

The Olympic also stressed that India have world class athletes who represent the nation at various platforms but for their growth, they ‘deserve a strong, responsible, skilled and autonomous institutional structure.’

“There has never been a more exciting time in Indian sport with the best ever performances of our athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The level of government support has also been excellent and is at levels not seen before across a wide variety of sport,” said Bindra.

“The prospect of India as a sporting nation is very real and one gets the feeling that we are only getting started. The athletes and the public deserve a strong, responsible, skilled and autonomous institutional structure to take this mission forward.” he added in the meeting.

The main purpose of the joint meeting was held in order to agree on a constructive solution and establish a roadmap leading to NOC.  The Olympic medallist, thus pointed to an incident wherein IOC had issued a last warning for IOA, earlier in September to get their house in order.

A few days back, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had issued a warning sign to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), in context to resolve all issues of the Sports in the country and around its hierarchy, whereas a clear suspension was on the way.

Earlier on, FIFA, the governing body of Football in the world had put up a ban on the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in view of interference of third-party involvement. The ban was however, lifted after some days and FIFA had ordered AIFF to go ahead as plan and schedule of all the events and tournaments.

Now, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of India, Anurag Thakur has come up with an eye-catching statement, in which he has said that the federation needs to come forward.

“It’s the federation that needs to deliver” said the former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The statement by Thakur should be stressed upon as the central government cannot go through each and every detail and cons happening in the procedures and execution of plans.

The key responsibility is of the Sports Federation, and they should ensure that each player and athlete in the country is equipped with the latest methods and services in their respective games.

Member of Indian women’s hockey and experienced midfielder Namita Toppo has announced her retirement from all forms of Hockey, she has played more than 150 international matches after making her arrival back in 2012.

Hailing from Odisha, Toppo was a part of the winning team that won bronze and silver medals in the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games respectively.

“The last 10 years have definitely been the best years of my life. I had a dream to play for my country at the biggest stages and I am so happy that I have been able to achieve my dreams,” said Toppo in a Hockey India release statement.

“I hope I have made a huge impact and I am very thrilled to see the way the Indian Women’s Hockey Team has progressed in the last decade. I will keep cheering and supporting for the team while I move on to a new chapter in my life.” added the Indian midfielder.

Moreover, Toppo was first selected for the Indian team in the FIH Champions Challenge I in Dublin in 2012. Although, she first represented her state team in 2007 and her performances in domestic competitions saw her getting selected for U-18 Girls Asia Cup in Thailand.

Namita Toppo was part of big tournaments like FIH Women’s World League Round 2 in 2013 where India won gold, 3rd Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in 2013 where India won a silver.

Rajeev Mehta has asked for ‘wholehearted support and cooperation in making the National Games successful’. “As far as athletes are concerned, participation in the National Games is most important for them,” wrote the IOA secretary-general in a letter.

He added: “To ensure the esteemed significance of the National Games, participation of all eligible eminent athletes who have taken part/won medals in International Games and Championships are necessary to compete in the 36th National Games also. The Sports Federations and State Olympic Associations are requested to keep this in mind when selecting the athletes for representing their sports and states.”

However, in the beginning of the year, the National Games were not even in the picture anywhere. It was only in June that the IOA decided to conduct the event, which was originally scheduled to be held in Goa, in the year 2016.

“If there is a clash between international tournaments and the national games for some of the athletes we will discuss and find the best possible solution,” Mehta told the Indian Express.

“We are trying to ensure a way through which at least some of our top-ranked shooters can take part in the National Games. With regards to the rifle/pistol team, they will have to compete in Gujarat before quickly turning their attention to the World Championships,” the official said.

Moreover, he shotgun World Championships are up to take place in Osijek, Croatia, from September 19 to October 12. Afterwards, from October 12 onwards, the rifle and pistol World Championships will begin in Cairo, Egypt.

Odisha Juggernauts have claimed a comprehensive and crucial 57-43 victory against Gujarat Giants to head into the final in the inaugural edition of Ultimate Kho Kho at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune on Friday.

Suraj Lande contributed for the Odisha Juggernauts’ win by earning 13 points, he dismissed five players, along with Dilip Khandavi, who brilliantly defended for 3.48 minutes in the final turn.

Abhinandhan Patil scored 10 points for Gujarat Giants. Despite losing by 14 points, Gujarat Giants still have a chance to seal their berth in the final as they will play the Telugu Yoddhas in the eliminator of the qualifier 2 on Saturday.

After having a dry run on the international stage and facing drought of medals, time has been the best for Sakshi Malik. Also, there was a time when she was unable to beat the state-level wrestlers as well, which also took a toll on her confidence and wrestling career.

The Olympic medalist’s mental health had taken a bad hit and although she had backing of her coaches and parents, at one point of time she was also considering to quit the sport altogether.

However, winning the trials and qualifying for Commonwealth Games 2022 gave her a new reinvention of life. At the CWG 2022, Sakshi was victorious as she won the gold medal in the 62 kg category.

Recently, speaking at a webinar organised by Inspire Institute of Sports, she spoke on the importance of the mentors in sports.

“Importance of a mentor is huge. I can speak about one experience from my life. I had no one to speak to when I had my down period. Sports has its ups and downs. There were coaches and parents but a mentor can easily get you out of that mental trap. When I was on the verge of breaking down, was about to quit, a mentor could have helped me lift my spirits,” said the wrestler.

Moreover, Sakshi also expressed the importance of athletes completing their studies and gave her own example on the focus on education. She claimed of wanting to quit her studies to give more time on wrestling, although, her parents refused to take it into consideration and she is happy that her proposal was refused.

“Education is very important. I have studied in an English medium school right from the start. When I started wrestling, I had to manage the stress between playing the sport and going to tuitions and school. I told my parents that I want to quit studies and pursue wrestling but they did not allow me to do that,” Sakshi said.

“I now know the importance of those words. As today education comes really handy to me as I can deal with many challenges when I go abroad for tournaments. Whether it is speaking to someone or filling a simple form or basic understanding of things, I can easily do everything. Education is important as sports, it helps your confidence,” she said in her conclusion

The Supreme Court of India has asked the central government to take some “proactive steps” with the World governing body of football, FIFA, to ensure that the suspension of the AIFF (All India Football Federation) is lifted and the country is allowed to host the U-17 Women’s Football World Cup as planned earlier.

“Solicitor General has informed the court that government of India is in active engagement with FIFA and stakeholders to ensure Under-17 World Cup in the country as planned. The meeting happened on Tuesday and discussions are ongoing. We request the Centre to take proactive measures to ensure holding of Under-17 world cup and lift the suspension on AIFF so the objective is duly achieved.” said by Justices DY Chandrachud, AS Bopanna and JB Pardiwala for AIFF on the request of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, in appearance for the centre.

With the discussion and talks in the hearing, Solicitor General has informed the court that the Central government has taken the issue forward with FIFA in context to AIFF’s suspension.

Yesterday itself government took it up as an issue. We had two meetings with FIFA. We have reached a stage. I must also say that the Committee of Administrators (CoA) has played a very constructive role. There is some breaking of the ice which has taken place. I am requesting if this can be kept on Monday,” said Tushar Mehta.

The Centre had mentioned on Tuesday that the decision of the FIFA Council suspending the AIFF with immediate effect, which has stripped India’s right to host the U-17 Women’s World Cup, which was scheduled in October.

FIFA, announced on Tuesday that it has decided to suspend the AIFF with immediate effect and the decision was taken unanimously by the Bureau of the FIFA Council. The decision has been taken due to “undue influence from third parties”, which is a serious violation in the FIFA Statues.

However, FIFA has claimed that the suspension will be revoked once the order appointing the Committee of Administrators (CoA) to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee is repealed.
