The entire range of time and space, as well as all of its constituent objects, like as galaxies, planets, stars, and other bodies of matter and energy, are collectively referred to as the universe. Any arrangement of stars and interstellar stuff that makes up the cosmos is referred to as a galaxy. In this article, we provide the top 5 list of galaxies in the universe, which is highly helpful for preparing for competitive exams like the UPSC preliminary, SSC, State Services, NDA, CDS, Railways, etc.

List of Galaxies in the Universe

The Universe is made up of all of space, time, and all of its objects, such as galaxies, planets, stars, and other types of matter and energy. Any of the star systems and interstellar materials that make up the cosmos are referred to as galaxies.

Ever since the start of the scientific revolution, people have been learning more and more about nature and her wonders. Humans are driven by curiosity to discover the mysteries of the cosmos and its splendor and majesty as never before.

The following section cover the lists of known galaxies in the universe:

Andromeda

It is a spiral galaxy that is 2.5 million light years away from Earth and is the Milky Way’s closest significant rival. Its name is derived from the region of the sky where the constellation of Andromeda can be seen.

Black Eye Galaxy

It is a galaxy that was found by Charles Messier in 1780, Johann Elert Bode independently in April of the same year, and Edward Pigott in March of that year. It is known as the “Black Eye” or “Evil Eye” galaxy because to the striking dark band of absorbing dust in front of the galaxy’s light center.

Bode’s Galaxy

It is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major, some 12 million light-years away. On December 31, 1774, Johann Elert Bode made the discovery.

Cartwheel Galaxy

It is a lenticular galaxy and ring galaxy located in the constellation Sculptor, 500 million light-years distant. Astronomers gave it the name “Cartwheel” because it resembles a cartwheel.

Cigar Galaxy

It is a starburst galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major, about 12 million light-years away.

Comet Galaxy

The Hubble Space Telescope discovered the spiral galaxy, which is placed in the galaxy cluster Abell 2667, 3.2 billion light-years away from Earth.

Cosmos Redshift 7

It is a Lyman-alpha emitter galaxy with a high redshift.

Hoag’s Object

It is a ring galaxy, an unique form of galaxy. It was found in 1950 by Arthur Hoag, who classified it as either a planetary nebula or a strange galaxy with eight billion stars. Hoag is honored by the name of this object.

Milky Way

It is the galaxy in which our solar system is based. Because its disk-shaped structure is seen from the inside, it appears like a band. In 1610, Galileo Galilei used his telescope for the first time to separate the band of light into individual stars.

Mayall’s Object

Two galaxies that are 500 million light-years apart in the constellation Ursa Major collided to form it. On March 13, 1940, Lick Observatory astronomer Nicholas U. Mayall of the United States made the discovery while utilizing the Crossley reflector.
