The latest streaming service Jio Cinema, started by the Reliance company, has made a deal with Warner Bros for its content to be shown in India. This collaboration will strengthen Jio Cinema to compete against Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The Economic Times reported that, after the deal, the Warner Bros. content as well as its HBO content will become available on Jio Cinema such as Game of Thrones, The Harry Potter series etc.

“HBO Original, Max Original, and Warner Bros. Television series are set to premiere on Jio Cinema on the same day as the U.S,” the companies said.

The HBO content was available on the Disney+ Hotstar app but the partnership between the two streaming services ended on March 31, 2023.

Clement Schwebig said that the agreement was part of the commitment towards the South Asia market, as the company looks forward to strengthening the scale of its regional business. Clement Schwebig is the president of Warner Bros. India, Southeast Asia, and Korea.

This deal is going to bring thousands of hours of streaming content to Jio Cinema, which has already become successful with the IPL 2023 broadcasting for free.

Viacom18 won the digital streaming rights of IPL from 2023 to 2027. Reliance, Paramount Global, and Bodhi Tree are the shareholders of Viacom18.

According to the latest reports, Jio Cinema is about to merge with Voot, which is a streaming service of Viacom18. By the end of IPL 2023, Jio Cinema is expected to become Jio Voot and they are also going to charge the subscribers for the streaming content.

The reason JioCinema is popular is that it is a streaming platform with zero subscription fee and you can subscribe with your phone number.

After IPL, JioCinema will become a paid streaming platform. The subscription plans could start from Rs 99, according to the report by OnlyTech.

The plan of Rs 99 is still not confirmed whether it is monthly or quarterly. Reliance’s media and content business president Jyoti Deshpande confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg that JioCinema will indeed expand its base and start charging for content consumption.

JioCinema users are not sure whether IPL will be streaming for free or not. Jyoti Deshpande also said that IPL will continue to be free even after the new subscription plans.

With new content releasing soon, the change to the name should happen shortly because “JioCinema” is now labeled as the IPL streaming platform. The name is probably going to be converted into JioVoot. The name comes from the expected merging going to happen with JioCinema and Viacom 18’s Voot.

Voot is already another streaming platform that offers content at Rs 299 per year. Voot is a streaming platform under Viacom18 which is under Network18, which is a Reliance Industries Subsidiary.

The new platform will offer over 100 new movies and TV shows. Jio has confirmed that they will add over 100 movies and shows before IPL ends. With the IPL ending next month, we will get more information.

Reliance’s entertainment division, Jio Studio, recently announced about 100 original productions might come this year. ‘Dunki’, starring Shah Rukh Khan, a courtroom drama by Amitabh Bachchan, and ‘Bediya’ and ‘Stree’ sequels are expected to be on this list.
