While the public beta program of HarmonyOS NEXT is ongoing for certain devices, the brand has updated the Chinese developer website with the ‘HarmonyOS’ branding. This could mean that Huawei is returning back to ‘HarmonyOS’ from ‘HarmonyOS NEXT’.

Read more about it below.

Huawei Going Back to ‘HarmonyOS’ Branding From HarmonyOS ‘NEXT’?

Based on this new update (received via @LivingInHarmony), it has been pointed out that as per Huawei’s updated Chinese developer website, the brand is slowly returning back to ‘HarmonyOS’ branding from ‘HarmonyOS NEXT’. The ‘DEVELOPERS’ tag further reiterates the website shift that is believed to take place soon, and a message board about the Chinese Spring Festival is being displayed now.

During the Spring Festival holiday from the 28th of January 2025 to the 4th of February 2025, Huawei is planning on rolling out a few updates and these may be affecting Huawei developer services. Review for identity verification, review for merchant identification, and customer service are some of the things that will be carried out during the holiday period. To add, the brand’s bulletin for developer updates also notes about the upcoming updates.

Among these, the Mate 60 series, Mate X5 series, and MatePad Pro 13.2″ series were provided with the HarmonyOS Next public beta eligibility on 8th October 2024, whereas the Pura 70 series, Pocket 2 series, and MatePad Pro 11″ 2024 models were made eligible for the public beta program on the 22nd of October 2024. Also to add, the latest Mate 70 series and Mate X6 devices also got the HarmonyOS Next public beta program eligibility in December 2024.

Speaking more, the HarmonyOS Next is considered to be a major upgrade over the previous custom skin and unlike this which is based on the Android operating system, the latest HarmonyOS Next is independent of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Notably, few of the key features include a revamped and fresh user interface with several enhancements to improve the user experience, improved privacy and security features with the help of the Star Shield architecture, upgraded performance with the Ark Engine, better cross device functionality relying on the Distributed Soft Bus feature, and equipped with over 15,000 native app support.

The company did not reveal the actual launch date but it did release the official upgrade plan for HarmonyOS Next. Apart from this, it was also revealed that this latest software upgrade will replace Windows in upcoming Huawei PCs.

Huawei has now officially confirmed that HarmonyOS Next will launch on 22nd October in the Chinese market.

Reportedly this custom skin will be abandoning the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and support for Android apps. It is said to support in-house code and apps. It uses a self-developed microkernel OS based on OpenHarmony open-source core. It is expected to offer a seamless unified architecture. Detailed information regarding this upgrade will be known after the official launch.

Other than this, Huawei is also currently rumored to be working on the Mate 70 series which is expected to launch soon in China. As per a Weibo tipster, this upcoming series is expected to use an upgraded AI sensing chip to enhance existing gestures.

This means that apart from Air gestures that were introduced with Mate 30 Pro and is constantly being upgraded, users will also get to see more new motion-based features to make users work easy and enhance their overall experience.

This AI sensing chip that is tipped to arrive with the smartphone series is expected to track and identify motions or signals made by user’s hand which will then be recognized by the device to fulfill the desired command. These sensors are further said to be combined with 3D depth-sensing lenses, infrared technology as well as machine learning to provide accurate results in real-time.

Huawei Mate 70 series is also expected to be powered by a new Kirin 9100 chipset. In the coming days, we may come across some more details related to this upcoming smartphone series.

HarmonyOS Next will be the upgraded version of the currently available HarmonyOS. It is said that the stable version of HarmonyOS Next will be rolled out in Q4 2024.

Reportedly Huawei is planning to make HarmonyOS Next a fully independent operating system. As per a report by TechSpot, Yu Chengdong, head of company’s consumer business group, the PCs currently being sold by Huawei will be the last to feature Microsoft Western OS. The next batch of Huawei computers will include HarmonyOS Next, the upcoming iteration of the operating system that is expected to debut by the end of this year.

It is said that HarmonyOS Next is being shaped as a microkernel-based system with no traces of AOSP code or residual Android compatibility. This reshaped OS will support its own format of native apps which according to the project page includes a mix of JavaScript, TypeScript, and an optimized design to speed up the execution of JS code.

However, it is also said that HarmonyOS Next lacks support from game developers, and few apps available for the platform are either in demo form or missing essential features. The company has already announced the official HarmonyOS NEXT upgrade plan for its devices alongside the rollout timeline.
