Google’s next Tensor G5 chip has already been part of multiple reports in the past and we have come to know about a few of its key specs through these updates. Now, Google’s Tensor G5 processor (alleged) has been spotted on the Geekbench database, again pointing to its core specs and GPU.

Alleged Google Tensor G5 Chip – Geekbench Listing

The alleged Tensor G5 chip of Google, as per the Geekbench listing, is pointed out to have a codename ‘Frankel’ (previously it was said to have the codename ‘Laguna’), and has scored single-core and multi-core scores of 1323 points and 4004 points respectively. The listing further mentions that it will have a core configuration with one primary core, five performance cores, and two efficiency cores, as revealed earlier. They will have respective clock speeds of 3.40GHz, 2.86GHz, and 2.44GHz. Finally, Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR D-Series DXT-48-1536 GPU is also integrated on to the chipset.

Speaking of previous updates, the upcoming Tensor G5 chip will be manufactured by TSMC and not by Samsung this time, and it will consist of a ARM Cortex X4 core, five ARM Cortex A725 cores, and two ARM Cortex A520 cores according to the recently shared leaked report. The Tensor G5 is believed to be made using the 3nm class N3E process node, with a die size of 121 mm².

Performance-wise, even if the Tensor G5 chip doesn’t compete well with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 processors, when compared to the previous Tensor chipsets, the Tensor G5 shows significant performance improvements. Along with the powerful software that the brand will provide, the Tensor G5 chip will be offering better performance on the next Pixel devices that are coming with this latest chip onboard.

Early this year itself, reports pointed to Google’s plan to not rely on Samsung for its Tensor chip development this time, and through the publicly available trade database, towards the mid-half of this year, it was revealed that the upcoming chip will indeed be manufactured by TSMC. Now, via a leak from the gChips division of Google (received via Android Authority), the specification details of the Tensor G5 chip have been unveiled. When compared with the previous Tensor processors, this time’s Tensor G5 chip will be bringing certain improvements.

Let’s look more into it.

Google Tensor G5 – Leaked Specifications

Firstly, while looking at the architecture of the new Tensor G5 chip, the same single ARM Cortex X4 core has been retained as per the leak, but with changes for its performance and efficiency cores. Along with the ARM Cortex X4 core, five ARM Cortex A725 cores and two ARM Cortex A520 cores are mentioned to be present.

On the GPU side, instead of the ARM Mali GPUs that we saw on earlier Tensor chips, the Tensor G5 is said to use a GPU from Imagination Technologies/IMG. Yes, Google’s Tensor G5 may be integrated with the IMG DXT-48-1536 GPU with a clock speed of 1.1 GHz. To add, it has also been revealed that ray tracing and GPU virtualization will be supported as well.

Finally, with a 14% faster TPU(Tensor Processing Unit) and 40% larger TOPS(Trillions of Operations Per Second) value, better performance and AI capabilities can also be expected. Embedded RISC-V cores and on-device training support will further be beneficial for Google developers as per the report.

Speaking more, the Tenor G5 chip codenamed ‘Laguna’ is already suggested to be made using TSMC’s 3nm class N3E process node with a die size of 121 mm², making it larger than Apple’s latest A18 Pro chip (with die size of 105 mm²) built on the same TSMC process node.

To conclude, even if the Tensor G5 specs are not that interesting when compared to other recent flagship chips (Snapdragon 8 Elite and Dimensity 9400), do note that Google may be relying more on the software side of a device rather than on the hardware. Even with the few improvements that will be made on the upcoming Tensor G5 chip, better performance is sure to be offered on the next Google Pixel 10 series smartphones that are believed to be powered by the Tensor G5 chip.
