In a statement, Deutsche Bahn claimed it inaugurated a ‘railway bridge’ of cargo trains to Kyiv on Friday to transfer crucial products to war-torn Ukraine.

The public corporation stated, “On the night of Thursday to Friday, a first train (…) left the Seddin marshalling yard, outside Berlin, in the direction of Kyiv.”

This train, laden with 15 containers, carries a total of ‘350 tonnes’ of products, according to Deutsche Bahn (DB), which is 100 per cent controlled by the German government.

According to DB, he takes “sleeping bags, mattresses, nappies, canned food, drinking water, warm clothing, and baby food,” as well as medical supplies.

A representative for the group told AFP that “more trains” should arrive “in the coming days.”

This business is organised by DB Cargo, a commercial freight subsidiary, and DB Schenker, a logistics subsidiary.

“Today, we are starting to help swiftly – with what is most required,” DB Cargo president Sigrid Nikutta said in a statement.

Deutsche Bahn says it has put up a “secure and stable” train logistics network to distribute the aid across the country during the war but doesn’t elaborate.

According to the company, humanitarian donations from German citizens will also be funnelled through this logistics network.

In reality, three DB Schenker subsidiary locations in Cologne (west), Hanover (north), and Munich (sur) have established collection centres for humanitarian aid.
