The Tornado is the only German aircraft capable of carrying US nuclear bombs, stored in Germany, in the case of a collision. But the air force has been flying the airplane since the 1980s, and Berlin plans to launch it between 2025 and 2030.
A German defense source told Reuters in early February that Germany had relied on the purchase of the F-35 but a final decision had not yet been made.

Germany plans to purchase 35 U.S. warplanes F-35 built by Lockheed Martin Corp (NYSE: LMT) to replace its old Tornado, Reuters reports. Germany is also planning to purchase 15 Eurofighter jets equipped with an air force at Airbus SE (OTC: EADSY), a report citing a secret document sent to lawmakers.

“After careful consideration of all available options, I decided to proceed with the purchase of the F-35 instead of the Tornado in the nuclear arsenal,” the report quoted a statement issued by Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht.

The report added that German air force has been flying the Tornado since the 1980s, with Berlin planning to eliminate it between 2025 and 2030. The Tornado is the only German aircraft capable of carrying US nuclear bombs stored in Germany in the event of a collision.

The Chinese government has proposed a 1.45 trillion-yuan (USD 230 billion) defence budget for fiscal year 2022, a 7.1% year-on-year increase, according to state-run China Daily, citing draught budget proposals presented by Premier Li Keqiang to the National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s parliament, today.

The increase increases China’s defence budget to more than three times that of India’s defence budget of 5.25 lakh crore (approximately USD 70 billion) for 2022.

China’s defence spending surpassed USD 200 billion for the first-time last year.

In his work report to China’s Parliament, Chinese Premier Li called for the People’s Liberation Army to “deepen comprehensive combat readiness” (PLA).

To defend the country’s sovereignty, security, and development interests, he said the Chinese Army must “carry out military struggles in a resolute and flexible manner.”

The increase in China’s defence budget for this year comes amid the country’s standoff with India in eastern Ladakh, as well as rising political and military tensions with the United States.

During the 21st Dr Srinivasan Memorial Lecture – 2021, organized by the ADA in Association with Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), DRDO Chairman G. Satheesh Reddy gave some important details about the upcoming TEDBF aircraft for Navy.

The TEDBF is being developed to replace Russian-origin MiG-29Ks. The MiG 29Ks are to be retired in 2034.

According to the Chairman, the TEDBF is a medium weight fighter class. The maximum take of weight is going to be 26 tonnes and is of the STOBAR variant.

In the preliminary design, we can clearly see a canards integration with aircraft. These canards will help in generating more lift for the aircraft while launching from aircrafts carrier.

The TEDBF is set to have its first flight in 2026 and will be in service to the Navy from 2029-30.
