The documentary “India’s Space Odyssey” from the Discovery + streaming service has been recognized at the ContentAsia Awards. The documentary, directed by Pria Somiah, chronicles the country’s six-decade journey into space. It received the prize for the best current affairs programme for a mono Asian market on Friday at a ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand. Other nominees in the same were, “999: Jenayah Musim Banjir,” “Dangals of Crime,” “Gaganyaan Bharat Ki Antariksh Udaan,” and “Money Mafia S2”.

Followed by R Madhavan’s narration  ‘India’s Space Odyssey’ shows different scientific researches and authorities. Narrated by actor R Madhavan, “India’s Space Odyssey” features different experts from ISRO as well as space historians, and ISRO’s former chairman Dr G Madhavan Nair.

Miditech Studios produced the documentary for Warner Bros. Discovery / Discovery+ India, which was released in October 2021. According to a press release, the ContentAsia Awards include 23 categories and bring ContentAsia’s experience, depth of knowledge, and integrity into Asia’s Awards space.

According to McCormick, a historian and archaeologist who serves as the director of the Harvard University Initiative for the Science of the Human Past, the year 536 marked the start of one of the worst eras in which to live.

For 18 months, Europe, the Middle East, and portions of Asia were completely in the dark due to a strange fog. According to Byzantine historian Procopius, “because the sun put forth its light without brilliance, like the moon, throughout the entire year.” The summer of 536 had a 1.5°C to 2.5°C drop in temperature, beginning the coldest decade in the previous 2300 years. That summer in China, snow fell, crops failed, and people were hungry. According to the Irish chronicles, “food failed from the years 536-539.” Later, in 541, the bubonic plague ravaged Egypt’s Roman port city of Pelusium. According to McCormick, what became known as the Plague of Justinian spread quickly, killing one-third to half of the population of the eastern Roman Empire and hastening its fall.

Although the origin of the enigmatic clouds has long been a mystery, historians have known for a long time that the middle of the sixth century was a gloomy period in what was formerly known as the Dark Ages. Now, a team led by McCormick and glaciologist Paul Mayewski at the Climate Change Institute of The University of Maine (UM) in Orono has identified the culprit through an incredibly exact examination of ice from a Swiss glacier. The scientists revealed during a workshop this week at Harvard that a catastrophic volcanic eruption in Iceland at the beginning of 536 sprayed ash over the Northern Hemisphere. The years 540 and 547 saw the eruption of two more supervolcanoes. The team explains in Antiquity this week that the repeated hits, followed by disease, caused Europe to enter an economic rut that lasted until 640 when another signal in the ice—a spike in the airborne lead—marked a rebirth of silver mining.

Researchers have been looking for an explanation since tree ring investigations in the 1990s revealed the summers around the year 540 were exceptionally chilly. Polar ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica provided a clue three years ago. Sulfur, bismuth, and other materials are spewed high into the sky by erupting volcanoes, where they combine to produce an aerosol veil that reflects sunlight into space, cooling the earth. A team led by Michael Sigl, who is currently at the University of Bern, discovered that virtually every extremely cold summer during the past 2500 years was preceded by contrasting the ice record of these chemical fingerprints with tree ring records of climate, a volcanic eruption can be detected. A large eruption stood out in late 535 or early 536, possibly in North America, and another one followed in 540. The twin blow, according to Sigl’s experts, was what caused the prolonged darkness and cold.

This year’s heatwave has moved up many notch and broke long-standing records. June and July saw heatwaves struck Europe, North Africa, Middle East and Asia, that rose to above 40 degree Celsius in places. 

Reports indicate that emissions of greenhouse gases by human activity is causing extreme weather conditions. These conditions are even capable of disrupting human living conditions. 

Western Europe experienced fires fuelled by heatwave spread across Portugal, Spain and parts of France. Western Europe was already experiencing severe drought prior to this. Leiria, a town in Portugal experienced temperatures up to 45 degree Celsius on July 13. This had caused more than 30,000 hectares area to burn. Firefighters across the country battled 14 active fires and more than half the country was on red alert. 

In Las Hurdes, a town west of Madrid, more than 15,000 hectares have burnt. 

On July 3, a portion of the Marmolada Glacier collapsed because of the record heat in Italy. The following avalanche killed 11 hikers. 

The Met Office in UK issued extreme heat warnings. Authorities expected temperatures to continue escalating to more than all-time highs. 

Temperatures in Iran in the month of July remained high as June. In June, it reached a scorching 52 degree Celsius. 

China experienced three heatwaves this summer. This buckled up roads, melted tar and popped off roof tiles. Shanghai Xujiahui Observatory, who has been maintain records since 1873, stated that on July 13, 2022 they recorded its highest temperature ever: 40.9 degree Celsius. 

Authorities reported that such extreme heats would directly affect human health and carry along other consequences.

In Asia, the industry for electric vehicles is quickly expanding, with electric car sales expected to peak in 2021. According to EV-Volumes, the Asia-Pacific area alone sold about 2.96 million electric vehicles last year, with China being the largest market. In China, electric car sales in January 2022 were up to 141 percent higher than in January 2021, with over 400,000 vehicles sold. This year, the global market for electric vehicles is experiencing the highest sales growth.

BYD Auto

BYD is a Chinese electric vehicle and energy storage product maker. With China set to become the world’s largest consumer of electric vehicles in 2022, it’s no surprise that a Chinese electric vehicle maker would lead the list of Asia’s and the world’s best-selling electric vehicle manufacturers. In fact, with 229,506 units sold in 2019, BYD is second only to Tesla.

SAIC – General Motors Wuling

With over 400,000 cars sold in 2021, Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV breaks a major sales record in the EV sector. According to the China Passenger Car Association, Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV achieved the all-time monthly record in December 2021, with over 50,561 units sold. It is currently widely regarded as one of the best low-cost electric vehicles available.

Nio

Nio is one of Asia’s leading electric car manufacturers. It began as a global electric vehicle firm in November 2014. In 2021, Nio sold 91,429 vehicles, an increase of 109.1% from the previous year.

Nissan

While creating one of the world’s best-selling electric car models, the Nissan LEAF, Japan’s Nissan will no doubt be on the list of the finest electric vehicle producers in Asia and the world. Nissan Leaf will be ten years old in 2020, having initially been released to the market in 2010. Nissan was able to sell over 500,000 LEAFs worldwide throughout the 10 years.

Zhidou

Zhidou, best known for their D2 electric minicar, is also one of Asia’s leading makers of electric vehicles. In 2005, the business began developing electric vehicles exclusively for the European market. They created a little electric automobile for city transportation, intending to make parking easier. In 2020, the firm sold over five million vehicles in China, cementing its position as the market leader for the 15th consecutive year.

Xpeng

Founded in 2014, XPeng is a Chinese electric car manufacturer. From the beginning of 2022, XPeng has seen robust automotive sales, with the fifth straight monthly result above 10,000.

Hyundai

Last but not least, the South Korean automotive business Hyundai, well known for their EV model Hyundai Ioniq 5, must be included in any ranking of the finest electric car manufacturers in Asia. Hyundai Plug-In Wholesale Sales surpassed over 160,000 sales in 2021. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is also renowned as one of the world’s best electric cars, with two battery packs: 58kWh and 72.6kWh.

Russia and Ukraine have been at odds for years, even after the Minsk agreements were signed following Moscow’s seizure of Crimea, which is part of Ukraine. Ukraine was a member of the Soviet Union until December 1991, when it left. It was the “disintegration of historical Russia,” according to Putin. Just last year, Putin referred to Russians and Ukrainians as “one nation.”

The broadest and most direct impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a significant shift in global power, which has been dominated for the past seven decades by the United States-led vision of rules and values. According to Sky News, the transfer of power from the United States to Russia would affect every nation on the planet, including England and Ukraine. It is also difficult to imagine a powerful neighbour, Russia, seizing a European nation in the twenty-first century.

Most Asian countries have either prepared for any eventuality or have offered to mediate the talks between Russia and Ukraine. India, on the other hand, has largely avoided involvement. India, along with Gabon and Kenya, abstained from voting on the Ukraine crisis at the most recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting. Instead, India has called for a solution that takes into account “the legitimate security interests of all countries and aims to secure long-term peace and stability in the region and beyond.”

India’s friendship with Russia dates back to the early days of the Cold War; officials regard Moscow as a trustworthy partner. India remained silent when Russia invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea in 2014, and it voted against a United Nations resolution defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity. According to Tanvi Madan and Pranab Dhal Samanta, another Russian invasion of Ukraine would be devastating to Indian interests. New sanctions would also make India’s defense trade with Russia more difficult.

India will be hard pressed to stand up to Moscow, and not just for sentimental reasons. Russia is India’s top arms supplier, and the country risked US sanctions by purchasing the S-400 missile defense system. Moscow also makes an important contribution to a multipolar world order by dispersing power beyond Washington and Beijing. This, too, makes India more likely to stay quiet about Russia’s actions in Ukraine and elsewhere.
