Microsoft releases August 2025 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11; Windows 10 KB5063709 update also rolling out

Microsoft has released the August 2025 patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11. The update replaces Blue Screen of Death with Black Screen of Death, fixes security problems, and addresses other bugs.

Windows 11: August 2025 patch updates

For Windows 11 24H2, KB5063878 will update your system to Build 26100.4946, while for the 23H2 version, KB5063875 will update it to Build 22621.5768. Do note that, if you are on 23H2, support ends on November 11, 2025, after which you will be upgraded to 24H2 or stop getting updates.

These latest updates are mandatory as they contain the August 2025 Patch Tuesday security patches for vulnerabilities discovered in previous months. You can download the update through Settings> Windows Update or from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

  • In Europe, AI features like Recall are now available.
  • The Settings app is easier to reach with the Agentic Search Bar, and problems with unresponsive windows and saving WiFi passwords are fixed.
  • A new quick machine recovery tool can automatically fix major boot problems.
  • The Start menu, Snap layouts, and Windows Search have been fixed.
  • The touch keyboard now has a better gamepad layout, even for lock screen PIN entry.
  • File explorer performance and icon display issues are fixed, and notifications should now open the correct apps.
  • The system should feel faster if you had issues after the May update.
  • A new Black Screen of Death, which replaces the Blue Screen of Death.

Windows 10: KB5063709 update rolled out as part of August 2025 Patch Tuesday

This update does not add new features, but lays the groundwork for the October 2025 end of support. It is a mandatory security update, and it begins downloading automatically. The update is said to be less than 200MB in size when installed via Windows Update, but if you use Update Catalog, it’s about 700MB. For the 22H2 version, KB5063709 will update your system to Build 19045.6216.

What’s fixed?

After this update, more users should see the toggle for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) enrollment wizard. The ESU Wizard crashing issue is also fixed. There’s a new Enroll Now link inside the Windows Update page, clicking which will open a new window called ‘Enroll in Extended Security Updates.’ In addition to ESU-related changes, Windows 10 KB5063709 has the following list of fixes:

  • Microsoft is allowing you to SKUSiPolicy VBS Anti-rollback protections through the Secure Boot.
  • Microsoft says it made changes to core system files, which should help with slow performance caused by the May 2025 security update.
  • A bug has been fixed where some users in certain regions could not select words when using the Changjie Input Method.
