Space Invaders: World Defense

Space Invaders had its first release in 1978 and was released by Taito, the Japanese video game company. It was first made available in arcade form and the game has now turned 45 years old. In association with this celebration of the 45th anniversary, Google has joined hands with Taito to bring out a new AR version of the game, Space Invaders: World Defense.

This new AR game has been powered by Google’s ARCore and Geospatial API and is based on the original game itself. What makes it even better is that, players can bring the game to the real world with the help of augmented reality(AR). The game will integrate with the player’s surroundings and will blend in with the location as well as the local time and weather. The gameplay will involve players exploring their neighborhoods, spot Space Invaders, and taking them down. For each Space Invader that they take down, the players will be receiving points with which they can also compete with their friends to be on the top with respect to their scores. To add more fun, the game also lets its users unlock special power-ups and also allows them to take an AR selfie with their achievements on it.

The original game will always remain as it is and no version will be able to replace it. However, this new version of the game made by Taito and Google together is an attempt to offer players the original game making use of the technologies now available. Space Invaders: World Defense has now been listed on both Android and iOS app stores and users can download it on their compatible devices.
