Know why Indian government make that mobile phone manufacturers have to register IMEI numbers in government portal

Starting in 2019, manufacturers of smartphones will now be required to register the IMEI numbers of the handsets they produce. According to a new regulation that makers must abide by, all IMEI numbers for mobile phones and smartphones must now be registered with the Indian Counterfeit Device Restriction (ICDR) portal. Beginning January 1, 2023, the law will be in effect, and all manufacturers must abide by it.

The law was passed to address the problem of counterfeit goods skipping inspection by exploiting these IMEI numbers. The likelihood of black marketing, phone theft, and phone tampering are all increased by unregistered IMEI numbers. The spread of fake goods in India can be significantly reduced with the registration of IMEI numbers.

Government registration is required for IMEIs used by phone makers.

The Indian Counterfeit Device Restriction webpage run by the Department of Telecommunications is where all phone makers must register their IMEI numbers and provide their IMEI certifications in accordance with the mandate. This is relevant to both locally produced and imported gadgets. The Prevention of Tampering of the Mobile Device Equipment Identification Number (Amendment) Rules, 2022, have been used to issue the law.

Prior to importing a mobile phone into India for sale, testing, research, or any other purpose, the importer must register the international mobile equipment identity number of the device with the Indian Counterfeit Device Restriction portal (https://icdr.ceir.gov.in) of the Government of India in the Department of Telecommunications.

The IMEI number is often used by service providers to verify a mobile device and by the authorities to identify mobile devices in the event of a theft. Any device’s IMEI number may be seen by dialling *#06#. Your device can be a fake if the IMEI number isn’t shown. The IMEI number may also be located on the packing box and inside the Settings menu.
