Petrol engine variant for Jeep’s Compass SUV to make a comeback in India with a new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine

Recent reports have brought to light that the Compass SUV by Jeep will incorporate a petrol engine once again. Jeep India is currently in the making of a new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine for their Compass SUV. The new variant of Jeep Compass with the new petrol engine would take about 18 to 24 months to be launched.

In the month of May 2023, Jeep decided to discontinue 1.4-litre petrol engines for the Compass. After that, only the diesel variants of the Compass SUV were available in India. Jeep phased out the petrol variants as it was not able to comply with the BS6 Phase 2 emission norms. As a result, Jeep could offer only a diesel variant for one of their lower-end vehicles. This consequently had the possibility of harming their market stability in India.

In the latest developments, Jeep is now planning to bring back the petrol variant for their Compass SUV in India. And this time it is a new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine.

At a time, when most companies were walking or shifting to lanes of petrol or hybrid engines, it seemed unconventional of Jeep to discontinue the petrol variant for Compass. Reports have also suggested a significant downfall in Jeep’s market numbers for about two months.

Jeep’s new move to bring back a petrol engine suggests that their plan to stick to only a diesel variant for the Compass probably didn’t work out right.
