Who developed these chopsticks and why?
The device was Co-developed by Meiji University professor Homei Miyashita and beverage maker Kirin Holdings Co. It was basically developed to decrease the salt intake of Japanese people. Salty taste is an integral part of Japanese cuisine. As of November 2019, the average salt intake of a Japanese citizen was 10 grams per day. Which is twice what is recommended by WHO. Consuming this much salt creates serious health issues.

The technology behind the chopsticks
Miyashita developed these chopsticks using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on a wristband. The device uses a weak electrical current to transmit sodium ions from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where they create a sense of saltiness, said Miyashita.
The developers claimed that using these chopsticks the saltiness of the food increases 1.5 times, which enhances the taste of the food.
Miyashita and Kirin are working on refining their design. And will most probably be commercializing the chopsticks next year. These chopsticks can be a game-changer. And will be of great help to reduce the salt intake of people and in the reduction of heal related caused due to excessive salt intake.
