China’s new tech catalogue casts shadow on future of TikTok sale

China’s tech giant ByteDance may have to suspend negotiations over the pending sale of its popular app TikTok after Beijing released a revised catalogue of technologies that are subject to export bans or restrictions, according to experts.

Bytedance is currently in talks with Microsoft for the US firm to buy the video-sharing app’s US operations.

The revised catalogue added a total of 23 items subject to export restrictions while deleting four items prohibited from export, including microbial fertilizers and caffeine production technologies.

The new catalogue is aimed at better regulation of such exports, accelerating scientific advancement and international economic and technological cooperation and protecting national economic safety, the statement read.
