YouTube Premium Family Membership to be paused if you don’t live in the same house

Shocked reading the headline? Well, if you are a part of the YouTube Premium Membership plan, then this news might concern you. YouTube Premium Family Plan is priced at Rs 299 per month in India, which allows a user to add up to five family members to the plan, sharing YouTube ad-free and YouTube music access.

Since 2023, YouTube has required all members to live under the same roof as the plan manager. Despite conducting electronic checks every 30 days to ensure that each member lives under the same address as the family manager, users managed to skip the check-ins and continue using the family plan even when living far away. YouTube seems to now get stricter with the living under the same roof policy for this plan, as various users have now started getting warnings for the same. (via @TrakinTech).

In the official email, YouTube has mentioned that it appears that a member is not in the same household as their family manager, and the membership of that user will be paused in 14 days. Once the access is paused, the user will remain in the family group, but they will only have access to ad-supported content.

This move seems similar to what Netflix did back in 2023, a password-crackdown in which the company ended password sharing around the world, allowing only members of a household to be able to access a single account. The announcement faced backlash from users, but afterwards Netflix gained a lot of new subscribers due to this reason.

It now appears that YouTube is aiming for the same by keeping a watch on the members of a Premium Family plan.
