OpenAI Launches Learning Accelerator in India; 500,000 Free ChatGPT Licences Planned for Educators and Students

OpenAI has announced the launch of the OpenAI Learning Accelerator, an India-first initiative aimed at supporting educators and learners through AI-driven research, training, and deployment. The announcement follows OpenAI’s earlier report that ChatGPT Enterprise will be made available to the entire US federal workforce at $1 for the next year.
Key Highlights of the OpenAI Learning Accelerator
1. Strategic Partnerships with Leading Institutions
OpenAI is collaborating with IIT Madras, the Ministry of Education (MoE), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and ARISE member schools to drive AI integration across India’s education ecosystem.

- OpenAI and IIT Madras signed an MoU to conduct long-term research on AI’s role in improving learning outcomes and fostering innovative teaching practices.

2. Expanding AI Access Nationwide
Over the next six months, OpenAI plans to distribute 500,000 free ChatGPT licenses and training resources to educators and students:
- Ministry of Education (MoE): ChatGPT access for government school teachers (Classes 1–12) to aid lesson planning and student engagement.
- AICTE: Free ChatGPT access for technical institutes nationwide, aimed at boosting digital skills, employability, and practical AI applications.
- ARISE Member Schools: Providing K–12 educators with personalised AI-powered teaching tools.
3. AI Literacy and Teacher Training
OpenAI and its partners will design comprehensive training programmes for both educators and students to ensure responsible and effective AI usage.
4. ChatGPT “Study Mode” for Students
Based on learner feedback from India, study mode has been introduced as a personalised tutoring feature that offers step-by-step explanations, interactive questioning, and structured learning to improve understanding and engagement.
Additional India-Focused Initiatives
The Learning Accelerator builds on OpenAI’s recent moves in India, including:
- Opening its first India office in New Delhi later this year.
- Launching a nationwide education campaign highlighting ChatGPT’s role in learning.
- Introducing ChatGPT Go, an India-specific subscription priced at ₹399/month with UPI integration.
- Expanding OpenAI Academy, a nationwide AI literacy programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and IT.
- Improving Indic language support in the GPT‑5 model for better accessibility.
