Mozilla Ends Firefox Support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1; Firefox 115 ESR Updates Continue Until February 2026

Mozilla has officially confirmed that it is ending support for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 on the Firefox browser. While these operating systems have already reached the end of their lifecycle from Microsoft’s side, Firefox had continued to provide extended support for users who were still running them.

That, however, is now coming to a close.

Firefox support ends for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1

Mozilla has announced that Firefox 115 will be the final version of the browser to support Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. The company confirmed that this version will continue to receive security updates through the Extended Support Release (ESR) channel until the end of February 2026.

This means users on these older versions of Windows will not receive any new feature updates going forward. Only critical security patches will be provided under the ESR programme, and that too only until February 2026. After that, there will be no further updates of any kind for Firefox on these platforms.

Users who are still running Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 can download Firefox 115 from Mozilla’s official website. The download page automatically detects whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit and installs the appropriate version.

Looking back, Microsoft had already ended official support for Windows 7 in January 2023, along with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Shortly after, Google ended Chrome support for these operating systems on 10 January 2023. Despite this, Mozilla chose to continue supporting Firefox on these legacy systems, making it one of the last major browsers to do so.

Mozilla had initially announced plans to end support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 by September 2024. However, that deadline was later extended to 2025, and eventually support was continued through Firefox 115 ESR. With the latest confirmation, February 2026 will now mark the final end of updates.

With this decision, Firefox officially closes the chapter for users on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Mozilla is encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 10 or a newer version of Windows. Alternatively, users may consider switching to a Linux-based operating system if their hardware allows. Continuing to use unsupported systems and browsers after February 2026 could expose users to security risks.
