There’s been a lot of buzz online about whether TikTok is making a comeback in India. The chatter began after TrakinTech, a popular Indian tech YouTube channel, shared a screenshot on its X account, claiming TikTok’s website is working in the country. Shortly after, tipster Mukul Sharma also posted a similar screenshot with a message “Interesting. Tiktok website is opening in India, without a VPN”, adding to the speculation.
For a bit of background, TikTok, along with several other Chinese apps, was banned in India back in 2020. Since then, neither the app nor the website has been accessible. Trakin Tech’s post quickly grabbed attention, but when I checked TikTok’s website myself, it was still down. I also looked for it on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store here in India, and there’s still no sign of it.
As of now, there hasn’t been any official confirmation, neither from TikTok nor from the Government of India, about a possible return. I even went through TikTok India’s social media handles, and the last post there was way back on March 16, 2021, on Instagram.
So, for now, I’d say it’s best to take this buzz with caution. Until there’s an official statement, we really can’t say that TikTok is coming back to India.
