Instagram Rolls Out New Feature Letting Users Customise Their Reels Algorithm

Meta-owned Instagram is rolling out a new feature that allows users to customise their Reels algorithm, giving them greater control over the type of content they see. In a post shared from Instagram’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the platform wrote:

“Building your Instagram algorithm ‘brick by brick’ just got easier. Just go to your Reels tab and tap on the top right corner to find your algorithm. There you can modify your interests to make your algo your own. (Available to English-speaking users in most countries.)”

However, Instagram has not revealed the exact number of countries where this feature is currently available. While the rollout is said to cover “most English-speaking countries”, availability still appears to be limited. For instance, the feature is not yet showing up on devices in India — it remains unavailable on both Android and iOS at the time of checking.

How the new Reels algorithm customisation works

The post also includes an image demonstrating how users can access and use this feature. Here’s how it works:

  • Open the Reels tab from the bottom navigation bar.
  • On the Reels screen, tap the filter icon located in the top-right corner.

You will then see options for:

  • What you want to see more of
  • What you want to see less of

Under the “see more” section, Instagram already suggests certain keywords based on your existing interests. Users can further add or edit these keywords to fine-tune their recommendations. Similarly, by adding topics under “see less”, users can reduce or completely avoid certain types of Reels appearing in their feed.
