Instagram rolls out Map feature in India with new privacy updates

Back in August 2025, Instagram introduced a new Location Map feature that allowed users to share their last active locations with their chosen friends, while the Map can also be opened to see content your friends and favorite creators post from fun on interesting locations.
Previously, this feature was only available in global markets, but it has now been released in India as well, with several improvements since the initial rollout.

The feature now rolls out in India with several improvements to user education and the product experience:
- To help make it clearer if you’re sharing your location on the map, you’ll now see a more prominent, persistent indicator at the top of the map reminding you whether or not you’re sharing your location, or if you have your device location off entirely. There is also an indicator under your profile photo in the Notes tray that clarifies if you’re not sharing your location.
- Profile photos are removed from showing on top of the content to help clarify that it’s not someone’s location.
- Additionally, an educational reminder appears that mentions that when you add a location tag to a story, reel, or post, it will populate on the Map.
- Lastly, to help reduce confusion around how your location-tagged content appears on the Map, a preview is added to show you how your content will look on the Map when you add a location to your Instagram content.
