Arattai – An Indian-Made Privacy-Focused Alternative to Other Popular Messaging Apps?
The India-based multinational technology brand – Zoho had introduced its Arattai instant messaging app back in January 2021, and it was initially brought out as a beta version. Notably, the Tamil word – ‘Arattai‘ means ‘chat’ or ‘casual talk’, and this itself is the sole purpose of Zoho’s Arattai app. Additionally, it also gives key focus to security and privacy, and assures that it does not share user data with any third parties. Features such as text/voice messaging, audio/video calls, group chats (up to 1,000 members), media/document sharing, and channels are part of this Indian-made app as well, making it a ‘swadeshi‘ alternative to ‘videshi‘ messaging apps.
Guided by Narendra Modi’s attempt to make more Indians adopt ‘swadeshi‘, the Union Education Minister – Dharmendra Pradhan via an X post has asked citizens to switch to Arattai (~ ‘India-made apps for staying connected with friends and family). In related news, three days back, Ashwini Vaishnaw (Union Minister of Electronics & Information Technology, Railways, and Information & Broadcasting) had also made a similar announcement on X, stating that he is moving to Zoho for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
Regarding Zoho’s Arattai, it is available for download on mobile (iOS and Android), desktop (Mac, Windows, and Linux), and also on smart TVs (Android TV). Interested users can download it (here) absolutely free of charge.
