The American AI tech brand – xAI has now introduced Grok Code Fast 1 and it is now available for free on multiple AI-powered tools including GitHub Copilot and Windsurf. This latest reasoning model is characterized as ‘speedy’ and ‘economical’, and it is aimed at excelling in agentic coding.
Check out more about it and its features below.
xAI’s New Reasoning Model – Grok Code Fast 1 Officially Introduced
The Grok Code Fast 1 model (~ previously released under the codename ‘Sonic’) that has now been introduced by Elon Musk-headed xAI is claimed to be built from scratch and on a brand new model architecture. Programming-related contents for pre-training, and high quality datasets for post-training, were offered and through the entire training process, xAI worked with launch partners for sharpening Grok Code Fast 1 model’s behavior in different agentic platforms. Mastery of tools such as grep, terminal, and file editing are also key features of this model.

Speaking more, several techniques were used from the brand’s end to accelerate Grok Code Fast 1’s serving speed and with prompt caching optimizations, cache hit rates of over 90% were noted when working with xAI’s launch partners. Notably, xAI’s Grok Code Fast 1 model is also versatile across the full software development stack, and it also works well with programming languages like TypeScript, Java, Python, C++, Rust, and Go. On the SWE-Bench-Verified, Grok Code Fast 1 attained 70.8% making use of xAI’s internal harness.

Pricing, Availability, and Updates
As mentioned, the Grok Code Fast 1 is currently available for free on xAI’s launch partner platforms – GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Cline, Kilo Code, Roo Code, opencode, and Windsurf. However, it has to be noted that this is an exclusive limited-time launch offer and will be accessible only for the next 7 days. After this period, it will be generally available via the xAI API at USD 0.20 per 1 million input tokens, USD 1.50 per 1 million output tokens, and USD 0.02 per 1 million cached tokens.
xAI additionally has also promised consistent updates for Grok Code Fast 1 and few improvements will be arriving in the next few days. Furthermore, another variant with multimodal inputs, parallel tool calling, and extended context length capabilities is already undergoing training and can be expected soon.
