Proton Launches Open-Source, Privacy-Focused Authenticator App with Encrypted Sync

Proton has launched Proton Authenticator, a cross-platform, open-source app for managing two-factor authentication (2FA) codes. The app is designed with privacy in mind, offering users an alternative to proprietary options. This launch follows the earlier release of Proton Calendar for iPad, extending Proton’s calendar service to larger screens, and comes shortly after the introduction of Lumo, Proton’s new AI assistant designed with a privacy-first approach, now available on Web, Android, and iOS.

Key Features

Proton Authenticator includes end-to-end encryption to keep 2FA codes private and encrypted sync across devices. It also works offline, providing access to codes without internet connectivity.

The app is available on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Linux, and includes features such as biometric or PIN locking, manual and QR-based code entry, and the ability to import/export codes. It does not include ads or tracking and is open source, allowing public code audits.

How It Works

To use the app:

  • Download the app from a supported platform. A Proton account is optional but required for sync.
  • Scan QR codes or enter secret keys from services that support 2FA.
  • Use 6-digit codes generated by the app to complete logins.

The app supports automated QR recognition and basic usability features for setup and management.

Proton calls the app an alternative to widely used authenticators like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy. It distinguishes itself by combining multi-platform support, encrypted syncing, and an ad-free experience within an open-source framework.
