OpenAI retiring older models in Codex from 14th April

In February 2026, OpenAI retired its GPT-5 (Instant and Thinking), GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini from ChatGPT. It is now announced that the company is retiring some older models in Codex.

OpenAI is retiring older models in Codex when you sign in to Codex with your ChatGPT account on 14th April:

  • gpt-5.2-codex
  • gpt-5.1-codex-mini
  • gpt-5.1-codex-max
  • gpt-5.1-codex
  • gpt-5.1
  • gpt-5

From 7th April, the above models will no longer be shown in the model picker, while on April 14th, OpenAI will remove these models from Codex for ChatGPT sign-in.

After April 14, Codex with ChatGPT sign-in will support the following models:

  • gpt-5.4
  • gpt-5.4-mini
  • gpt-5.3-codex
  • gpt-5.3-codex-spark (Pro only)
  • gpt-5.2

Developers who still need one of the older models after the deprecation can use Codex with their own API key or configure a model provider.

In related news, OpenAI recently announced that teams on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise can now add Codex-only seats to their workspaces with pay-as-you-go pricing, giving full access to Codex without a fixed seat fee. OpenAI is also lowering the annual price of ChatGPT Business from $25 to $20 per seat.\
