Google introduces Gemini AI features in Gmail, making it your personal, proactive inbox assistant

Yesterday, Google officially announced that it is bringing Gmail into the Gemini era with features like AI Overviews, Suggested personalised replies, proofreading, and more.

AI Overviews

Sometimes our inbox is filled with numerous emails, making it quite tedious to search for the one important message. To solve this, Google is introducing the AI Overviews feature.

You may have noticed or used this feature in Google Search, and now in Gmail, AI Overviews will turn information into answers without the need for digging. When you open an email with dozens of replies, Gmail synthesises the entire conversation into a concise summary of key points.

So now, when you ask your inbox a question, Gemini generates a simple AI Overview with the answer.

Help Me Write, Suggested Replies, and Proofread

Users can try the Help Me Write feature to polish emails or draft them from scratch. There are also new Suggested Replies (an update to Smart Replies), which use the context of your conversation to offer relevant, one-click responses that match how you write.

Suggested Replies can instantly draft an initial response in your tone and style for an email, leaving you free to refine it before giving it your approval. Then comes the Proofread feature for advanced grammar, tone, and style checks to make your email more polished.

Next month, Google will update Help Me Write with better personalisation by bringing context from your other Google apps.

AI Inbox

AI Inbox is like having a personalised briefing, highlighting to-dos and catching you up on what matters. It helps you prioritise, identify your VIPs based on signals like people you email frequently, those in your contacts list, and relationships it can infer from your message content. However, Google has specified that this analysis happens securely with the privacy protections you expect from the company.

New AI features in Gemini: Availability

Many of the above features are possible with the help of Gemini 3. The AI Overviews feature is rolling out to all users in the US. Help Me Write and  Suggested Replies are also rolling out to everyone, while the Proofread feature is available for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. AI Inbox access is given to trusted testers before making it more broadly available in the coming months.

The rollout is initially starting with English and will be rolled out to more languages and to more regions in the coming months.
