European organisations introduce their W social media platform; Comes as an alternative to X

During the World Economic Forum in Davos, European Organisations announced the launch of their own social media platform called W that adheres to strict EU data protection laws. This social media platform was introduced amid rising tensions with the US and comes as an alternative to Elon Musk’s X.

The announcement of this platform comes after a group of 54 members of the European Parliament wrote an open letter to President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in which they mentioned, “ X is no longer an open and balanced tool for political communication or journalism, since algorithm changes in the wake of Elon Musk’s takeover. It is not a ‘public square’- it now resembles a deepfake pornography website, and a one-way broadcast system for Musk himself. The European Commission and national governments should not communicate on a platform where women cannot participate in the debate without risking image-based sexual violence.”

Anna Zeiter, who recently left her job as chief privacy officer at eBay, will be joining W as CEO. She announced the launch of this platform on LinkedIn. The wsocial.eu site is only open to early testers, and you need a code to access it. Currently, there is no app available for this social media platform. It is revealed that W will require identification and photo validation to ensure that its users are both humans and who they claim to be.

Reportedly, the initiative to create this new social media platform is supported by an advisory board and former ministers and business representatives, primarily from Sweden.

W is said to stand for “We.” Meanwhile, the first of the Vs that make up W stands for Values, and the second for Verified. It is specified that the data of this platform will be hosted decentrally in Europe by European companies. The platform will be focusing on fighting misinformation.
