Meizu 22 Air launch called off, but Meizu reveals how the phone would have looked

We recently heard the news that smartphone makers have increased the prices of their smartphones due to rising component costs. Well, Meizu had been planning to launch its version of a slim smartphone called the Meizu 22 Air. However, during the 2026 Meizu Fans Spring Festival event in China, Meizu responded to a question regarding whether the Meizu 22 Air would still be released, stating that the significant increase in memory prices has had a major impact on its mobile phone business plans. Regrettably, the company confirmed that the Meizu 22 Air’s launch plan has now been cancelled.

Even though the company has cancelled the launch of this smartphone, it still went on to reveal how exactly the device would have looked and also shared some of its key specifications during this event.

Meizu 22 Air – Design and features revealed

Speaking more about the device, the Meizu 22 Air was designed with a strong focus on modular design and customisation, positioning itself as a smartphone that is “not defined by limits”. The device would have featured a modular, detachable magnetic back cover ecosystem, allowing users to swap designs and personalise the phone’s appearance using a wide range of official and creative covers.

The smartphone was also said to include a two-stage customisable mode button on the side for personalised shortcuts and controls. Along with this, it would have featured a customisable “emotional light” — a dot-matrix style LED module placed near the camera (Just like the Nothing Phone (3))— capable of displaying different patterns and notifications. Meizu further highlighted that the device would have supported fully custom system themes to match the personalised hardware experience.

Looking further, one of the key innovations revealed was the PIN modular interface on the back, which would have supported attachable accessories such as an external battery module, a cooling grip or handle module for gaming, and even an external camera module.

Overall, the Meizu 22 Air was being positioned around flexibility, individuality, and modular expansion rather than just traditional hardware upgrades. However, with the launch now cancelled, it remains to be seen whether Meizu may revisit this concept in a future product.
