AirTag (2nd generation) launched in India with upgraded UWB chip, louder speaker and extended range

Apple has introduced the new generation of AirTag (2nd generation), nearly five years after the original AirTag was announced on April 20, 2021. The updated model brings improved findability through a wider tracking range and a louder built-in speaker.

Here is more to it.

AirTag (2nd generation) Specs and Features

The new AirTag (2nd generation) is powered by Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which is also used in the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone Air, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch Series 11. This enables Precision Finding to guide users to their item from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation, using visual, audio, and haptic feedback. Apple has also upgraded the Bluetooth chip, increasing the overall range at which the AirTag can be detected. For the first time, users can use Precision Finding directly from Apple Watch Series 9 or later, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later.

The internal design has been updated to make the speaker 50 percent louder than before, allowing users to hear the sound from up to twice the previous distance. Apple says this helps when items are hidden under furniture, inside bags, or in other hard-to-reach places. The AirTag also introduces a new chime to make it more recognisable when playing a sound.

The device continues to rely on the Find My network, which uses nearby Apple devices to anonymously relay the location of a lost item back to its owner. The new AirTag also supports the Share Item Location feature, which allows users to temporarily share the location of a lost item with trusted third parties such as airlines. Apple says it has partnered with more than 50 airlines to support this feature, and data shared through this method is limited, secure, and expires automatically after seven days or once the item is recovered.

Privacy and security remain a key focus. The new AirTag does not store location history on the device itself, and all communication with the Find My network is end-to-end encrypted. It also includes protections against unwanted tracking, such as cross-platform alerts and frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers.

Apple has kept the same physical design, meaning the new AirTag remains compatible with existing accessories. The company says the enclosure uses 85 percent recycled plastic, with 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in the magnets and 100 percent recycled gold plating in Apple-designed circuit boards. Packaging is now fully fibre-based. Accessories like the FineWoven Key Ring are still supported and made with recycled materials.

Pricing and Availability in India

The new AirTag is available to order in India on apple.com and through the Apple Store app, and will be available in Apple Store locations and Apple Authorised Resellers later this week. Pricing remains unchanged at INR 3,790 for a single AirTag and INR 12,900 for a four-pack, with free personalised engraving available. The AirTag FineWoven Key Ring is priced at INR 3,900.
