Top-seeded Medvedev triumphs in Indian Wells, while Pliskova is shocked

Top-seeded On a windy day at the BNP Paribas Open, Daniil Medvedev defeated Filip Krajinovic 6-2 7-6 (1) to go to the round of 16.

Beatriz Haddad Maia defeated Karolina Plisova, the first seed in the women’s draw.

Despite the difficult weather, Medvedev, the U.S. Open winner, hit on 70% of his first serves and blasted four aces.

Haddad Maia was a lucky loser who made it into the main draw. She qualified because No. 29 seed Nadia Podoroska withdrew due to a thigh injury in the final round of qualifying. Haddad Maia beat Mayir Sherif in the second round after inheriting Podoroska’s first-round bye.

The 115th-ranked Brazilian made it to the round of 16 for the first time in a WTA 1000 tournament.

Pliskova maintained service to tie the second set 5-5 on a windy day at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, although she was broken eight times during the match. Haddad Maia won her second career match against a Top-5 player after holding and then breaking Pliskova in the last game.

Number 15 Coco Gauff was defeated 6-2 6-2 by Paula Badosa, the 21st seed, in a match that was temporarily interrupted by rain on a night of stormy weather in the desert.

Angelique Kerber beat Daria Kasatkina, the 20th seed, 6-2 1-6 6-4. No. 12 Ons Jabeur won her 46th match of the year, defeating Danielle Collins 6-1 6-3.
