Lionel Messi makes history by winning the Ballon d’Or for the seventh time, while Chelsea FC takes home the ‘club of the year’ award

After a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, France Football resumed presenting the Ballon d’Or after announcing the coveted award ceremony would be held on November 29 at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris (CET).

As is customary among football fans around the world, predictions for the winner of the 2021 Ballon d’Or were made, with the favorites being Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi, and Jorginho, as all three had a fantastic year, with Messi winning his first major international trophy with Argentina in the Copa America 2021, Jorginho having a fantastic season after winning the Euro’s 2021 and the UEFA Champions League, and Lewandowski, who, according to reports,

After a strange year in which Messi left his beloved club, FC Barcelona, due to financial issues within the club, and joined the Parisians under Mauricio Pochettino, Cryuff’s 2012 prophecy seemed to come true as Messi was awarded a record, 7th Ballon d’Or, edging out runners-up Lewandowski and Jorginho.

FC Barcelona and Spanish starlet Pedri, on the other hand, was awarded the Kopa Trophy, which is given to the finest young player in the world, for his outstanding season with Barcelona and the Spanish national team during the Euros and Olympics. Robert Lewandowski took home the award for Best Striker of the Year, owing to his amazing season with Bayern Munich and the Polish national team. After a season-defining performance in the Euro, the Machine trophy was handed to PSG and Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donarumma for being the best goalkeeper this season.

Alexia Putellas, the captain of FC Barcelona Femeni, became the third woman to win the Ballon d’Or, following Ada Hegerberg and Megan Rapinoe, for her outstanding performance in leading her Barcelona team to their first-ever triple and Champions League title.
