Bajrang Punia clinches gold at CWG 22

Wrestler Bajrang Punia gave India its first gold medal in the sport of wrestling at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Punia defeated Lachlan McNeil of Canada in the 65kg freestyle wrestling final.

Bajrang Punia also sealed a bronze in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and has a gold and silver medal by him in the Commonwealth Games. His Commonwealth journey started off quite well as he won a silver in the 2014 edition in Glasgow, in the 61kg category.

Moreover, the Haryana boy won a silver at the Asian Games as well in 2014, a gold at Gold Coast 2018 and adding more glory to his name with an Asiad gold in Jakarta.

Bajrang beat the Canadian by 9-2 points, he won three of his four bouts in the first round.

Technique and Stamina was the main element of the Indian which gave him an upper hand against the Canadian.

Although, it doesn’t end here for India, wrestler Sakshi Malik outplayed Canada’s Ana Gonzalez in the women’s 62kg category to add a second gold for team India in the wrestling sport. A special moment for Malik as she claims her first gold at the Commonwealth, she clinched a silver in the 58kg category and bronze in the 62kg category in 2018.
